Moldovan Leader wins new majority in country’s parliamentary elections
(MENAFN) Moldovan President Maia Sandu’s pro-European party has reportedly won a new majority in the country’s parliamentary elections, according to preliminary results released Monday, as stated by reports.
The ruling Party of Action and Solidarity (PAS), which has held a majority in parliament since 2021, captured 50% of the vote with 99% of the 1.6 million ballots counted, and voter turnout exceeding 52%, according to reports.
The pro-Russian Patriotic Bloc, led by former President Igor Dodon, garnered 24% of the vote. During the election period, Dodon reportedly urged the opposition to assemble in front of parliament and claimed that Sandu intended to annul the results, though no evidence was provided. The Alternative Bloc, led by Chisinau Mayor Ion Ceban, received 7% of the vote.
PAS is projected to hold approximately 55 seats in Moldova’s 101-seat parliament, as stated by reports.
Authorities also reported security concerns during the election. Moldova’s Foreign Ministry noted bomb threats at several overseas polling stations, describing them as part of Russia’s “assault on the electoral process.” Additionally, the country’s Information Technology & Cyber Security Service (STISC) reported multiple cyberattacks on the electoral infrastructure, including the Central Election Commission website, beginning Saturday, according to reports.
Earlier this month, Sandu addressed the European Parliament, calling the vote the “most consequential” since Moldova gained independence from the Soviet Union in 1991. Analysts suggest the election outcome will play a critical role in shaping Moldova’s future geopolitical direction, according to reports.
